Celebrate the Season with these Allen Events
You don’t have to venture far to find magical, memorable ways to ring in the holidays. From Christmas concerts to Santa sightings, check out these fun-filled events happening in your own backyard.
Let’s Start with Turkey Day
Christmas carols may already be blaring from radio stations and shopping malls, but don’t let this gratitude-filled holiday go unsung. Bring little ones to Thanksgiving Story Time at Allen Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 21 for a special story and puppet show. If you’re welcoming young cousins or grandkids to town for Turkey Day, treat them to a showing of Disney on Ice, visiting Allen Event Center Nov. 22 and 24-26. Then let the whole family burn off calories (and extra energy) at the Great Turkey Skate, Nov. 25.
Deck the Halls
Yuletide festivities begin Dec. 1 at the Annual Christmas Tree Lighting at Allen Civic Plaza. Keep the holiday spirit going strong through the weekend with the Rudolph Run on Dec. 2, followed by Tea with the Sugar Plum Fairy. That Sunday, line the streets of downtown Allen for the Rotary Christmas Parade and attend the Holidays on Ice show at Allen Community Ice Rink; admission is free with a donation of a non-perishable food item.
If your little ones are eager to see St. Nick, consider visiting the Swim with Santa event at Don Rodenbaugh Natatorium, attending the Holiday Celebration! at Joe Farmer Recreation Center or even signing up to have breakfast with the big guy. Looking for a one-of-a-kind gift? The Holiday Arts and Craft Fair returns Dec. 9 to Joe Farmer Recreation Center. When the kiddos tire of traipsing through malls, sign them up for the Drop & Shop Holiday Skate at Allen Community Ice Rink on Dec. 16.
When it comes to holiday shows, Allen has plenty of options. Allen Philharmonic Orchestra and Symphony Chorus will hold a Christmas Music Festival on Dec. 8, featuring selections from Handel’s Messiah, John Rutter and sing-along carols. Brian Setzer returns to Allen Event Center Dec. 12 with his Christmas Rocks! Tour. And Allen Civic Ballet performs The Nutcracker on Dec. 16-17.
Ring in the New Year
Feeling cooped up in that final week of 2017? Bring Big Bid and Elmo fans to a showing of Sesame Street Live! Let’s Party! at Allen Event Center Dec. 28-30. (And if you’re stuck for a gift idea that won’t clutter the rec room, tickets make great stocking stuffers.)
When it comes to frosty fun, those events are just the tip of the iceberg. Check out the full holiday event schedule at CityofAllen.org/Calendar.
